Type of Lesson: Instrumental Music:  Clarinet Sectional Rehearsal.

OBJECTIVES:

1.  The students will be able to play band literature with good tone, and intonation.

2.  The students will be able to play melody and harmony parts in band literature with accurate pitch rhythm, articulation, and dynamics.

MATERIALS:

1.  Various band instruments, music stands, and chairs.

2.  Various band music selections.

3.  Chromatic tuner and metronome.

4.  Instrument Music Lesson by Mr. Long.

TEACHING PROCESS:

Teaching a Clarinet Sectional Rehearsal

Warm-Up

1.  Discuss the following points to the clarinet students:

• Breathing.  Practice deep breathing and ensure you fill your lower diaphragm with air.  Not your upper chest area.
• Air Support.  Exhale your air with a hissing or “ss” sound.  Notice how your diaphragm muscles move outward as you make the “ss” sound.  When playing clarinet you must exert these muscles constantly to produce proper air support.
• Play long tones.  Playing long tones on a daily basis will help develop good breathing and good air support which is essential for tone quality, intonation, and to play in the third octave range of the clarinet.
• Play F scale three octaves.  Play the F scale for three octaves beginning on the low F.  Play whole notes where the 1/4 note = 60 mm.

Instrumental Music Lesson

3.  Collect Instrument Music Lesson sheets from individual students.

• Allow each student to practice assigned scale and arpeggio at least one time.
• Ask each student to play assigned scale and arpeggio.
• Assign the next scale on the assignment lesson sheet.

Rehearse Band Music

3.  Rehearse selected band music as necessary to improve the following musical aspects:

• Dynamics.
• Staccato Articulation.
• Clarinet fingerings and alternate fingers as required.

• Form.  First and second endings, D. C., D. S, and Coda markings.

Assessment:

1.  The students are able to play band literature with good tone, and intonation.

2.  The students are able to play melody and harmony parts in band literature with accurate pitch rhythm, articulation, and dynamics.
